Floor Tantrum

Yes, kids really do lay on the floor kicking and screaming when they don't get their way.

Teaching Colsen Bad Habits

When I was 7, my mom would take me with her to play slot machines with her. I was a pro with the one armed bandit. One of my childhood memories is winning on the slots and watching all the quarters drop out. My mom used to always buy and let my siblings and me scratch off lotto tickets. Was it having fun or teaching us poor money management? Colsen sure has fun putting money in the lotto machine and pushing buttons to get tickets out.

Teaching Colsen Good Habits

I try to be a good parent and set the example for my child. For example we load the dishwasher together. So hopefully he will grow up realizing that he has to do his part in helping us clean up the house. We brush our teeth together so he knows that it's something he needs to do each day. All you can do is show him the right path and hope he goes down it.

Need More Milk

The amount of milk Colsen drinks in a week is obscene. We go through 2 or 3 gallons. Used to be a gallon could last a couple weeks. Fortunately, milk prices have done the opposite of gas prices and have stayed pretty low.

Ugh

If kids shouldn't put bags on their heads, why do toys come in bags?

Not unlike with cats, sometimes the packaging is more fun than the actual toy...

Finding Time

As most parents know, it's difficult to do anything that takes your attention away from a needy child. Colsen has separation anxiety and when he doesn't it's because he's finding a mess to make or mischief to get into. Each day it's quite a chore for me to get away and take a shower. As I see it, I have 3 options.

1. Ideally, he takes a nap while I shower. I know he's not going to get himself into anything when he's laying there passed out. Unfortunately, he never has the heavy eyes when it's time for me to shower...

2. I can lock him in the bathroom with me and let him cry it out. When he's crying, I don't have to see him to know where he is. Plus when Colsen is crying he just stands there concentrating on pouring out the tears. But this is kind of mean, and with the acoustics in the bathroom, it's not ideal for my ears or my sanity.

3. Our best option is to do it Marco Polo style. You know, the swimming pool game. Obviously he doesn't necessarily get this concept nor can he say Polo, but this is what we usually do. When I haven't heard him make any noise in a while, I yell "Colsen, say Hey!" He then usually yells something back. Lets me know that he is not unconscious and still out there somewhere.

Finding the Perfect Halloween Costume

Colsen is not yet old enough to pick out his own Halloween costume. That means all the pressure is on his parents to pick out the perfect mix of cute, amusing, and inexpensive. I know the other parents out there are going to be judging, comparing Colsen's outfit to that of their own child. Yeah, so Colsen has to look better. It's my fatherly duty to make sure my child is the rave of trick or treating and any Facebook album comparisons. I think we should have planned a little more ahead of time though. We went to a Halloween store the other day and didn't really find anything worthy for putting Colsen on display. All I know, is that whatever we get for him, he is going to look cute regardless. I mean, come on. Look at him.

Who let that kid loose?

Usually when we go to the store I keep Colsen restrained by putting him in a cart. The other day though I thought it would be a good idea to let him walk around. Apparently he didn't agree with the walking part of that idea. He ran around not unlike a crazed crack monkey. And he kept finding all sorts of trinkets and things to pull off of shelves. He obviously thinks stores are way too organized and felt like providing some job security to those who have to keep everything in the store tidy. In the above picture he found a movie he thought was particularly interesting. Fortunately, it was one that was too high to reach. Kind of random really. Not sure why that movie was more appealing than others. Yeah, so I'm that parent... the one chasing his hyper kid around the store and not really picking up after him. Fortunately though when it was time to leave, Colsen just dropped everything and was ready to go. So I'm not also that parent that has a screaming child trying to leave the store with a handful of toys. Yeah, you know who you are.

Eating Sonic

Our favorite place to go is, of course, McDonald's with their super sweet play place, but sometimes we just want to chill in the car so we hit up Sonic. Colsen loves to get the corndog kid's meal with the apples. Sometimes we get a banana. Overall though I think Sonic has the most choices when it comes to kid's meals.

Haunted Toys

Colsen has several different toys that sing or recite the alphabet. Some of these have seen quite a bit of wear and tear. It creeps me out however when they start randomly talking to me in the middle of the night. No one is around, Colsen is in bed, but toys just start counting at me. It freaks me out, man!

Who Needs a Vacuum?

I highly recommend that if you ever have a kid that you also get a dog. Ollie here is always helpful in that if Colsen ever drops food on the floor, he cleans it up for us. Any time Colsen eats, Ollie sits in waiting for the lost crumbs and morsels.
